Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#102299 We're planning a mini-me swap on my d15, and afterwards, we're going to grab a cheapo ebay turbo kit. We figure it should hold up ok to about 10 psi, which is all I'm planning to push through a stock motor. Thing is, out here, the cheapest rate is about 600 bucks an hour for a basic tune, and I don't feel like coughing up that kind of cash. What could I do in leu of pricey ass tuning fees.

#102331 you could find a local with a lap top and a little knowledge with Crome etc. and trade him a couple cases of beer for a street tune.

You should know by now though... the words Cheap and Turbo don't belong in the same sentence. This may not end well...

#102385 600 an hour my ass. You could have someone fly out there for less than that. Or drive somewhere.

#102412 seems damn expensive for an hour on a computer would be worth it to drive somewhere that would only charge 250 lol shop it around the best you can or like said above try and find someone that can give u a decent tune for a fraction of the price

#102416 yeah dude prolly one of the best tuners out here in cali "church automotive testing" he does a flat rate of 325 with crome and like 450 with s200 + or something like that

Oh for sure, We're expecting as much. Thats why I'm putting together a B swap on the side, in case I scatter the motor on the pavement. I just wanted to have a little fun with my single slammer before high school ends.

#102529 Also, Anyone heard of VTECnitians up in the Houston area? I think thats where my buddy had his hatch tuned.

they did some work for a homie of mine and he wasn't impressed

#102591 Yea, I was told by a buddy they charged a pretty penny just for a basemap, from there the price for a good tune can hit upwards to 600 bucks. I dunno though. :?

#102600 Hm, basemaps are free included in the software of the AEM EMS. And it can be tuned in about an hour or two. Bisimoto charges $160 an hour if I remember right, and he actually has an engine dyno (take off your wheel and bolt directly to your hub). In the summer I'm planning to drive out to CA and have him perfect my tune.

OEM ECU based software is fundamentally limited by the "flash" and "emulation" tuning strategies. Add to that the problems with inconsistent ignition timing. Innefficient and time wasting = more money and a compromised tune

Why do people compromise with engine management? It's the brain of your engine! If there is some flaw in your physical setup, A LOT can be done with ignition timing and fuel to keep your engine from blowing up.

#102646 hmm.

Could my stock internals stand up to 10psi? what could it SAFELY handle?

I know the question has been answered before. :eh:

#102648 The rule of thumb (haha boondock saints) for stock internals is 7lbs I believe

it depends on which stock internals and which turbo.
d16 rods are stronger than d15 rods.
d16s make better turbo motors than d15s
of course the exception is the jdm d15 vtec (because it uses d16 rods)
a t3/t4 turbo (typical ebay turbo) will probably destoy a stock d15 @ 10psi depending on the size of the compressor housing while a dsm t25 may not. also the higher the psi, the more critical the tune.

#102989 boondock saints hah.

Well, no magic can help an engine withstand too much power output. But for instance the tuner could run you rich with conservative timing, and use the onboard boost control to prevent you from going too high.
