ECU, Wiring, Sensors

#99555 After washing the engine and bay today, the speedo stopped working and the CEL came on for awhile. I switched clusters 2weeks ago and haven't had an issue with it since. I checked the code, 17 came up indicating VSS. And after doing a search here, it would explain my situation.
So, where is the VSS and how can I check it? I figure with washing the engine it came loose or something. A picture would be xtra helpful.
Car is a 95 coupe dx.

thx

#99563 the VSS is located right in the top of the transmission, kind of towards the back, i had a problem with mine too, went to the junkyard, replaced it and found out it was the cluster, hope this helps, i actually have an extra VSS in my drawer...lol

#99649 Thanks for the help and pictures.

How can you tell when or if it is bad?

#99682 i can't remember what the test is, but if you get out the haynes manual and your ohm/volt meter, you should be able to test the pins for the proper resistance or volts. also check the harness coming from the car to the VSS for the proper voltages, could be a wiring problem... but most likely if you got a CEL and it's pointing to the VSS, it's probably bad...

The engine light is an indicator that your sensor is bad. First you have to know what makes the speedometer operate. This is the VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor which is located on the transaxle (passenger side). You can reach the VSS through the engine compartment. There are a few hoses and wires you have to work around but nonetheless access is fairly easy. Check for loose or dis - connected wires or even corrosion at the VSS. Check for voltage at the connector to the VSS. You should have voltage. If there is no voltage/battery then check for open circuits bewtween the VSS and the fuse box. Check the black wire of the connector for continuity to ground. Raise and place the front of your car onto jackstands (securely w/ back wheels blocked). Shift your car into neutral. Make sure the VSS is connected and turn the ignition to ON position (don't start the car) the backprobe the yellow or white wire at the VSS connector w/ the positive lead (voltmeter) connect the the negative lead (voltmeter) to the body ground. This next part takes two people unless your talented. While holding one wheel steady, turn the the other wheel by hand. While you are doing this there should be a pulse on the voltmeter between 0 to 5 volts. If there is nothing your sensor is defective/bad. If this is the case be prepared to shell out at least $100 for a new VSS (autozone). There are two bolts that hold the VSS. This a ten minute job tops. Good luck.

hope it helps
