Front hub questions

Bought a pair of EG6 front hubs, but theres a few problems

I cant get the lower balljoint off - the LCA is still attached on one side and the nut is just spinning the thread. Ive tried soaking it in penetrating fluid, tightening it, loosening it, impact drivering it and clamping it in place while i try the other things but i cant shift it! :( Anyone know what else i could try?

Also, once that nut is off - how do you remove the lower balljoint to replace it? Can i use the ones off my old EG4 hubs since theyre in good condition?

Final question - im pretty sure at least 1 of the wheel bearings is knackered - it doesnt turn very easily at all and grinds like mad, how do i get to that or is that something i cant do at home?

Any help would be awesome

- Thu Dec 20, 2007 4:13 pm #34813 A fork as in a balljoint splitter? I tried that but the nuts holding the LCA against the hub, so nothing will move

Tried clamping it with the balljoint splitter and using a ring spanner to free it but i just cant move it :cry:

- Thu Dec 20, 2007 4:16 pm #34815 yea lol ball joint splitter my bro though me a trick using a flat head screw driver and if you have an impact or socket wrench you get the flat head and get it jam it so the ball joint is jam so you can try to loosen some times it works sometime it doesnt its a bitch tho

- Thu Dec 20, 2007 6:04 pm #34823 You can get the lower balljoints out by removing the retaining ring on top and then beating it out with a big hammer. Then put a small piece of wood on the new one and beat it in.

Get some new balljoints. By the time you hammer those used ones out and back in again, they're not going to look too healthy.

You sure you got the cotter pin out?

The wheel bearings are pressed in. Whenever I encounter bad wheel bearings, I either swap to Integra brakes or if I already have the Integra brakes, I swap just the hubs from late model junkyard Integra hubs.

- Thu Dec 20, 2007 6:08 pm #34825 Yeah the pin was definetaly out - these hubs only turned up in the post this morning, the guy i got them off really messed them up :x

I got the nut off, just cut it off cos it was pissing me off so need new balljoints, but they were ruined anyway

I see what youre saying about the wheel bearings, its only 1 that needs done, or it might just need regreased as the drivers side is fine, hopefully wont be too difficult to replace...

- Thu Dec 20, 2007 11:47 pm #34848 i have beat wheel bearings out of eg hubs before with a impact socket the same dia. as the outer race of the bearing, and a BFH. It takes some time but it can be done. Wear a glove. If you know of a local press, go that route. I just like doing things myself.


note to self: Thats a good DIY writeup.

Ill find out how much the bearings are and take things from there - going to replace the lower balljoints tomorrow

As for the wheel bearing it was okay after all, it was one of the studs had been dislodged and was pressing against the hub - i just pulled it back into place and its been fine :thumb:

Whats wrong with your ones?
