Installing a JDM B18C type R engine & tranny in my 92 ha

- Sun Sep 16, 2012 8:01 am #315772 I searched everywhere for lists of additional parts that were needed to install a B18C Type R engine and transmission.

As soon as I find the information needed Im going to buy the engine.

These are my questions:

1. What other parts will I need?

2. Will I need to purchase the additional equipment they have listed?( The ECU, Wiring Harness, and engine mount)

3. Is this engine and transmission ready to drop in without any fabrication?

4. Will I need to have the car tuned? Do I have to buy a hondata 300 and a AEM wideband? ( I dont want to buy these, my car is not for racing, just a daily driver car)

5. What other parts should I replace while I have the engine and transmission already out before it gets installed. I can only think of a few: B18C water pump, timing belt, spark plugs, clutch kit. (maybe new fuel injectors yes/no?)

4. Will the B18C-R axles fit? Or do I need to buy some hasport b-series axles : http://passwordjdm.com/Hasport-B-Series ... 2C472.aspx

5. Will the B18C-R shift linkage fit? Or do i need to buy a hasport shift linkage : http://www.jhpusa.com/store/pc/viewPrd. ... egory=1573

6. The engine i'm buying comes with a powersteering pump. I would like to have powersteering, so could I just go look for all of the other power steering parts off a GSR integra and hook it up? If I am not able to get powersteering then would all I have to is take off the power steering pump?

A performance shop will install the engine and transmission for about $650.

Since my uncle owns a a autobody shop and a junk yard, Im going to have my friend change out the clutch and spark plugs and then send over the engine and transmission to the installation shop.

So I hope this doesnt go over $7,000.

So far I spent
$1,500 92 vx civic
Future:
$4,220 engine and transmission (with tax)
$250 clutch
$150 water pump
$50 Timing belt
$800 installation

and more for all the other parts I find out I will need

I dont want to add or spend anything on modds that increases hp, I just want this to be like a daily driver 2006 honda civic SI/etc

3 yes it will just drop in but you might want to buy motor mounts

4 no you will not need to have the car tuned should be plug and play

5 all listed is good to replace while motor is out of the car eaiser to get to

Axles will fit

yes shift linkage will also fit comes with motor in link above

6 GSR would or should work, you will mainly need the line from the rack to the pump to cover the larger valve cover distance.

Make sure you get all honda parts for the timing belt and water pump, clutch is up to you. But make sure to have the flywheel surfaced or replaced when installing a new clutch.

A Type R is not really a long distance kind of car it was designed for the track so if you don't drive far each day then it will be fine, gears are super short and the final drive will put high in the RPM on the highway

You could save money and go with a gsr engine still get a lsd and then add an intake and header and have a good power and still good on mpg as well or even a B16A2 would be good a few bolt on parts and save even more money as well as good on gas. Just a few options to look at before you pull the trigger.

dizzy, ECU, harness and injectors, etc.. of get a conversion harness and do it like that.

as far as power steering goes, you'll need integra power steering line just make sure the head matches the power steering pump.

if not motor mounts are included you'll need to pick some up off an integra. (94-01)

I rather just buy the engine and transmission in a package that already comes with the harness.

Does dizzy mean distributor?

I think this would be an easier option for you, with out having to find all the parts you will need to convert an obd2 motor to obd1

the 1st gen Type R engine is OBD2A (96-97) meaning you would still have to convert it to OBD1

What is a blox? I thought blox was a brand name who made headers?

I really want a engine with 200 hp. I dont have any time to look for parts since I work full time with full time med school.

Questions:

1.What parts exactly would I have to look for when getting the type r engine? Would it be a pain in the ass to look for these even though a perfomance shop would be installing everything?

2. If I got the GSR engine and got a header would it be closely similar to a Type R engine except for the pistons and minor internals?

3. Would I be in the 190-200 bhp range if I got the GSR engine and bought a good expensive header and a intake manifold with a exhaust? (Even though I would hate for my car to sound loud, hopefully a silencer would help without power loss)

1. you would need a odb1 dizzy, wiring harness, injectors, ecu, your car would have to be wired if it not a vtec model for the vtec in the chassis wiring. Would it be imposible no but it is hard to hunt down these parts sometimes and spending all the money on a ITR engine it would be easier to go GSR. If the shop has done swaps like this before they will know what they are looking for and can sometimes locate the parts for you.

2. The GSR and ITR don't have many of the same characteristics. But there are people that are making around 180+ to the wheels with GSR with intake manifold header and exhaust and cams. Now having said that 200 hp ITR really only makes 180ish to the wheels from the factory, and a GSR makes 170bhp and puts down about 155hp + to the wheels. You also don't need a loud exhaust to make power there are plenty of quite options on the market for our cars.

3. Remember that the HP numbers you see are at the crank not the wheels so don't be disappointed if you go to dyno your car and it doesn't make 190-200hp to the wheels. A GSR in a hatch back or in any civic is a stout motor, with some basic mods it can make just as much power or more.

Sorry to hear about that I will try to pull up the url on the parts you would want for the GSR and some other pages of people having success with getting good HP numbers out of them later tonight. If you go thru HMotors you will get everything you need as well from axles wiring harness, shift linkage, and you can add an lsd trans and mounts in and stay under the price of a ITR. Since you will have to convert quite a few things.

If this car is actually good then I would buy this and sell my hatch. ( If I had problems then I could just get a new motor and tranny which hopefully wont cost too much and already have a turbo set up)

He said there is a tiny oil leak that drips about 4 drops from the oil pan when the car is parked out in the summer heat.

It is salvage title with a stock motor and then he installed the new motor.

I dont know how much installation of the parts would cost, but im thinking around $600 for the mods and $700 for the installation of the engine/tranny. It would cost me more to install a GSR with the mods.

What are your opinions on a H22A motor? I would do that option if it were less of a hassle than the Type R engine to find parts like a distributor, harness, mounts.etc. I know that the H22A motor requires fabrication and mounts into a civic.

If I were to go the H22A option would I have to find parts like I would with the Type R engine? Would it be less of hassle.

You can do cams but it can be done later if you want more power. So your at 600 bucks for both of those and maybe 400 for a good yonka exhaust. Good sound and power gains.

As far as an H22 don't know much about them. No you should be able to find an obd1 H22 and plenty of companies make mounts.

The hatch looks good that is for sale.

keep in mind you can save some cash and buy used items too.



www.ipgparts.com has some nice stuff for sale.

since you mentioned you have a 92 car you should be alright for wiring if anything you might need to wire for knock sensor ( i dont think OBD1 cars have that knock sensor)
