Daytime Running light idea

- Sat Nov 03, 2007 8:19 pm #28417 Ok so with my retro i am losing my DRL's and since they are basically required by law to have them on my car.

so here's my idea, i have city light sockets on the headlights, and i have the connectors. so my idea was to setup set it up to use the city lights as the DRLs. but i have no clue where to start, my haynes manual doesn't even have DRL's listed in it, cause it is American and the US models don't have DRLs.

I tried researching this, and the only thing i came across, was to just wire them up directly to the battery but i would rather incorporate it as the DRL's if possible, but may settle for that if need be

so.. anyone know where to start? :lol:

- Sat Nov 03, 2007 8:51 pm #28419 Required by which law if you don't mind me asking? Here in Ontario I unplugged my DRL fuses so my projector's don't run during the day since I'm using HIDs as well. I've never been stopped, and I know some older model cars came stock without DRL, so how could they require them by law? Just out of curiosity, nothing personal.

(n)Every motor vehicle manufactured on or after December 1, 1989, other than a motorcycle or moped, shall carry daytime running lights that comply with the standards prescribed for such lights by the regulations made under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada), and any motor vehicle manufactured before that date, other than a motorcycle or moped, may carry daytime running lights that comply with the standards approved for such lights by the Canadian Standards Association.

(3) Nothing in this Part shall be taken to preclude the use of day-time
running lights during daylight hours. R.S.P.E.I. 1974, Cap. H-6, s.112;
1991,c.14,s.7.

- Sun Nov 04, 2007 2:38 am #28433 There has to be some wiring that powers the lights. A relay and fuse. Just find out which fuse and relay and make sure those wires are powering your city lights.

well that part i have now, but the question at hand is what wires are they, there is 1 fuse for the running lights, yet two running lights, i have to look into this further, i would like to find out what wires are for the drl

- Sun Nov 04, 2007 2:55 am #28436 there will only be one fuse for both lights. There is only one fuse for the regular headlights. Take the wires that are not part of the head lights, low and high beam and those should be the DRL lights.

i am starting to think that the wiring is different in the Us and Canadian models lol, that or youe fuse panel is fucked lol, i have separate fuses for each low beam, and for each high beam (so 4 fuses in total) and then only 1 fuse for both DRL's

its about 16 bucks in parts and probably almost an hour worth of labor

local autozone

get the following

76-79 (i think thats what it says on the package) chevy van side marker sockets they are whiteish or cream in color has a brown line and a black line

194/168 bulbs any color i chose Stock clear but my bro has amber also is nice and acceptable

on your housing you'll see the a circle where the OEM city light socket is supposed to go

you can drill there or anywhere else

i drilled like a little ways away from that to avoid hitting the inner part of the shield
i forgot what size the bit is but if you look at it you'll probably get a good idea of what size it is.
after you drill it clean it and then plug it in and use some sort of silicone on it on so it wont fall out and let moisture in

ground the black and spliced the red wire on your Turn signals
this will let it come one with the parking lights and it WILL NOT BLINK :D

- Thu Nov 22, 2007 5:08 pm #31019 well i have the sockets, and the headlights have the holes for the sockets, cause they are aftermarket replacements. so all that stuff is done lol. I just need to figure how to wire them up so they come on automatically when the car is turned on
