- Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:23 pm #211715 Does this sound like a headgasket problem? When I let my car sit for any amount of time and start to drive it there is a popping noise and the car hardly moves so then I have to push the gas all the way down to get going any ideas?

headgasket-you will see a rise in temperatures possibly but most noteably you will have white smoke comming out the back of your motor...almost sounds like you have some sort of detonation going on hopefully your not useing the b18a1 injectors or something like that ......do you have a check engine light on?, and do you have any other symptoms?

It does burn oil and some coolant, as of now I replaced the coolant with water to clean the system but I am putting some antifreeze in it tonight. I just got the 93 del sol about 3 months ago, I did need a new thermostat put in so before it did used to heat up quick, so I am thinking new seals all around. It seams to be leaking from where the head gasket is also I just do not have much money at the time due to college and no garage or more complex tools to change the head gasket.

- Sat Sep 04, 2010 5:42 pm #212176 if the temperature isnt rising then i cant see it being a HG however the HG could be leaking and not blown, thus the burnig of coolant. you might also check for leaks in your coolant system to diagnose the eating coolant because the only way that i know of for a motor to eat coolant is blown HG. however the problem your having sounds like a blown HG the only missing symptom is the over heating.

also a HG replacement can be done with basic ratchet and socket set. the only special tool you need is torque wrench unless you have arp head studs then i believe you need a 13mm 12pt socket. its actually quite easy i have done numerous HGs and can say with patience and attention to detail it is no prob
