Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#71128 I've been told & read that installing a turbo will actually make your exhaust quieter because the exhaust is going through the turbine. Has anyone experienced this first hand after going turbo? How much quieter did your exhaust get (25%, 50%)?

Also, did it make it quieter all around or more certain sound ranges than others. (like the high pitch rhaspy sound was reduced, or the low resonating moan was reduced)

I test fit my Thermal R&D 3" cat back on my hatch over the weekend and HAD to take it for a test drive. :)
The Thermal R&D catback was just 3" SS piping and muffler, but the previous owner installed a resonator to make it quieter.

It was the most obnoxious sound I ever heard. Very rhaspy @ 3k RPM, and VERY loud all the time. Like 'don't even bother having a radio' loud. My car is still N/A d16z6 with 4-2-1 header and there was a test pipe on at the time. I'm hoping it will be a lot quieter with an HF manifold, T3 and 2.5" downpipe. My interior is gutted & stripped of sound deadening & I have a CF tail gate so that probably made it louder inside, but I hate to imagine what it sounded like from the outside!

#71162 Theres a show round here called gearz on the speed channel and he took a chevy vette and instead of using mufflers in place of them put twin turbos and it sounded nice and it was actually pretty quiet.

#71185 Yeah a turbo will make your car quiet,

EX: we took a D16z6 ex coupe, and ran a ihi rhb5 turbo off of a mazda, and the piping was only to the spot were the catalytic converter originally was and put a cherrybomb muffler at the end of piping., and it was like a straight pipe civic w/cat not bad at all

#71198 It will!

I had the d15b7 n/a and my invidea g300 xhaust en it was a pain to drive 100km on the highway.
With the turbo it sounds like OEM

#72600 I have a spoon N1 on my car and its loud with the turbo.. but it was as long as my buddies car that had a Spoon N1 on a LS. THAT was significantly louder than my car. I had 2.5" piping as well and he had 2.25. If I was NA I would have a really loud car.

#74242 yeah my experience is that is is quieter but you can make up for it by the sound of the bov when you rev so its all good lol

#78035 it quiets mines done alot I have a t25 internally wastegated on my d16z6 and every once and a while the wastegate gets stuck open and it's loud as shit then, but when I fix the problem it goes back to a little louder then stock. But when I run open downpipe that will be a whole nother story

#78037 my dad's F350 has a 7.3L powerstroke with just a down pipe and it's hella loud. but it's also a big motor with a big turbo. I can still listen to the radio, but this is with no mufflers or anything so yeah it's much quieter with a muffler.

#78147 I went from N/A B18b w/ 2.5" piping and Tanabe muffler to Turbo w/ 3" KTeller piping and Magnaflow muffler and the difference is amazing. Definitely not raspy at all and normal cruising (shifting 3000rpms) is not bad at all. I will say that on the highway at about 70-75mph its still kinda loud. I sprayed the back half interior with the black undercoating stuff from Gunk and that helped without adding weight.

Overall, shouldnt be raspy at all and normal cruising speed sound will drop by 50% (in my case, IMO). Of course i have a full interior as well
