#55952 I've been convinced. I want The Boost.

As many of you may know, I've been debating wether or not to go boost or NO2. I definately want to go down the boost route now. I need to know some boost basics. I figured this would be a good place to learn. :thumb:

1) what are the different types of turbos are there? What is the differance between T3's, T4's, and T25's? what are the differences?

2) should I buy a kit, or go for the junk yard turbo? If I am to go the junkyard turbo route, what should I look for?

3) No0b question time. what is the purpose of a wastegate, BOV, ect.

4) is it an easy DIY project for a 17 year old High Schooler?

#55959 start here:

http://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?t=443

I would read through the threads in the boost section of the site. There's a lot to learn. t25, t3, t4 are different sized turbos. depending on what motor you have and when you want your power will determine what turbo is good for you.

If you don't like the idea of hours of reading & studying about turbos, then I would look into a kit. When piecing together your own kit you will save some $$ and possibly make more power, but you can also have bad things happen if not configured correctly.

http://homemadeturbo.com is another good site to learn from
So is http://honda-tech.com if you filter out all the useless posts.

And of course you can always get help here :thumb:

#55974 From what I know if you do want to boost, you'll have to re-enforce your engine too. Boosting on a stock engine will kill it over a few K on the clock.

Pistons, rods, valves etc.

I'm also looking into turbo-ing, it dosn't just stop at the cost of buying the kit. From what I've seen Garrett turbos make decent HP for a Civic to handle.

all depends on the setup, tune, and condition/mileage of your stock motor

Jep :thumb:

You can run boost on your stock motor.

B16 can run up to 280bhp on a stock engine

D15/D16 can run up to 190/200 bhp on a stock engine

#56089 I've run my car pretty hard for the last couple of thousand miles. I have 121k on my d15b7.

Thanks for the tips Teal.

and Why did they have a breather in that diagram? I thought breathers were a BIG no-no.

#56816 When having boost, it's what you want.
If you'd recirculate, in boost it will create pressure in the crankcase and head.
Not good :P

#57245 anyone know how much a good tune would run me?

and what would a shop generally charge to install new pistons and rods?

#57278 A few grand will set you back for the hole works.

#57289 I just rebuilt a d16z6 top to bottom. It will have new gaskets, piston rings, just about everything will be new except for the piston, rod and valves. If I were to get a simple greddy turbo kit, how much psi could I put into it to have a decent amount of horse power and also have a daily driver and not worry to blow anything? ... right now the motor has an i/h/e ... so I have no clue how much hp I am running now -_-

#57291 you probably have about 100whp to the wheels...

Don't worry about psi. Worry about a power level you want to be at. 200whp is the magical number on a stockblock with decent reliability. I would definitely upgrade to ARP headstuds and a new headgasket to eliminate headlift problems.

Regardless of what you get, GET A PROPER Fuel Managment. AEM EMS, Hondata, Neptune, Uberdata, Crome, ECTUNE, etc etc.. Get something that will properly setup your fuel maps so you can run safely.

NOTE No matter what, you will always worry about it blowing up. Stock motors blow up too and it is impossible to make a bulletproof motor. Sometimes things just go wrong..

Boosted honda requires a tad more on the maintenance.. I noticed plugs foul out much faster with the rich fuel maps.

#57373 sweet.. thanks for the info :thumb: ... I know with the turbo kit and tune and what not , it will be pretty expensive, but I want more power :eh: ... I dont want too much though... I drove around in my girlfriends dodge stratus R/t w/200hp .. and that was extremely fun ( that car weighs 4000lbs too!) .. so If I could get 200hp with the turbo D .... I think that will be plenty.
