i am trying to figure out what i need to do to on checking my distributor timing with a timing light. i lost not sure where to start. please help

Sorry forgot to say it is a b16a jdm. not to many mods dun. just trying to get it to past emissions where i live. got the timing spot on just the other day running clean now just need some twiking .

Tricks I've heard is to retard the timing. Not so much to where it sounds like its running rough, but with timing retarded it will run leaner = less emissions gasses being sniffed.
I'm not 100% on how much, but I have seen it done and heard of it done.

Question, is there a reason to check your timing? Is it running rough?
To do a timing check with the gun.
* connect it to power your gun
* hit the gun to your crankshaft pulley
* once you hit it, you will see marks as the gun with flash to visually make it visual to see your marking.
The marking will show you where it is in position to your TDC marking.

\Before you go trying to adjust the timing, you need to warm the car up to operating temp, then jumper the service wire on the pass side foot well next to the ECU. You need to do that so the ECU can "relearn" the new timing.
You forgot a step. Timing guns have 2 wires. one for power and the other to clip on to the #1 spark plug wire. That's what makes the light pulse, the spark running through the wire.
Then, you look at the strobe and see where it lands with the timing marks on the crank pully. the white light is TDC, and the 3 red lines to the left are 14,16,18 degree's BTDC respectfully. Stock is 16 degree's BTDC. To adjust the timing, looses the 3 bolts holding the distributor loose turn the distributor to adjust the timing. Turn it clockwise or towards the bumper to advance the timing. Turn it counter-clockwise or towards the firewall to retard.
