#170737 I have a 95 Civic EX.

Looking for some advice.

What swap should I do?

I am thinking of a B20 VTEC Turbo

I need something that is reliable and powerful.

PLEASE HELP! :? :?

If yes, then yeah B20 VTEC is a good way to go.

If no, you can get more out of a B18

x2 on the b18. Fairly simple way to get decent power from a stock engine.

#170800 If you want to boost, you will want the B18. The B20's have 33% Less cylinder wall. Meaning they are much easier to crack the cylinder walls then a B18.

A Stock B18A/B, Left in non-vtec trim Takes boost quite well. The B18A/B isn't built to rev. Inorder to get a LS/VTEC(b18A/B block with B16 or b18c head) you will have to do a few mods to the bottom end if you want your engine to last you more then 6 months.

If you want to a Turbo VTEC, Get a B16 or B18C, Then boost them. They come with better transmissions to boot.

I wouldn't recommend anyone who hasn't had much engine building experence to build a LS/VTEC or B20/VTEC.

Anouther suggestion would be if you get a LS, Ditch its long geared transmission in favor of the Shorter Geared(Better acceleration) B16, and B18c(GSR) Transmissions.

#170820 While you are talking about it Chrono, what kinda mpg would I be looking at with the stock ls b18 with a ls tranny compared to a b16 or a gsr tranny? Just curious.

#170854 Not sure what the LS or GSR Tranny will give you MPG wise,

My EK hatch with a slightly modded and tuned B16, with B16 LSD transmission gets 22-25MPG. Its good to keep in mind that this is my Toy car and normally is driven harder then one would drive a Daily.

Also the B16 transmission has your engine at 4000 Rpms at 70mph in 5th gear. If you will be doing alot of freeway commuting you will want to have a GSR(b18c) Transmission for a taller 5th gear. which will give you better economy on the freeways.

Greesed monkey has a LS swap with a B16 transmission and stomps on straight b16 swaps. He could give you better details on exact what fuel economy to expect.

#170874 The B16 tranny is shit for boost due to its super short gearing. And the OP is looking to go boost.

I'd hold off until a B18C1 comes around if I were you. It's a better engine all around than the B18B1 or B20B4.

Thanks. I read the 22-25mpg and I was like, aahhhhh fuck... lol. I hated my crx for the fact that I would be 3500rpm running 80, always made me slightly angry, lol. Thanks again though, you always have good info.

Depends on your turbo size. With a Small turbo, mated with a b16 transmission would be a good combination.

I know that the LS transmission will give you more total hp, However it does so by slowing down how quickly your engine accelerate to give your engine time to spool your turbo. However if you had the B16 Transmission the car could be quicker do to the shorter gears and less total horse power.

Part of my reason for thinking so is my experience on the streets when I was stupid enough to do street drag racing.

I have seen a turbo 99 si(Stock Engine/tranny) beat a turbo LS/vtec(LS Tranny, B17 GSR head, Stock Bottom end w/ arp rod bolts, p72 oil and water pumps) in a EG DX hatch.

There are alot of factors in there, Turbo size, Drivers, etc. however IMO Taller geared trannys are for dyno whores.

You're right, there are a ton of factors. I guess we need to know what the OP is looking for in power as well as drive-ability.
