#75974 My material list:

2qts of gloss red rustoleum
1qt of gloss black rustoleum
1 2" roller with extra rollers. (must be high density)
1 thingy of mineral spirits

So I saw this one thread on a Mopar forum and it looked like a stellar deal. (will post a link later) I've started the painting today on the hood, and so far so good!

10 hours have past since I started typing this post. the hood had ALOT of orange peel and there were too many lines left from the roller. soooo I went into town and gave into 10 months of temptation and bought an electric palm sander. (I had been doing it with a tiny block-bondo and all) I sanded the hood down and started all over. I'll check it out in the morning. I made the second batch of paint MUCH thinner, and rolled it on, and the bubbles in the paint popped much faster but the lines were still there. :?

Teal, what am i doing wrong? any tips?

#75982  I think you're supposed to spray it.

but it does remind me of James May's v12 Jag in a topgear episode.

#76000 my friend repainted his eg ferari red... he used a roller for it -_-.... Trust me..... If you can get a good paint job on a roller... then you have dam good skill.... My friend's red hatch is orange peel city... not only that.. but the whole thing just looked fucked up.... yeah... I would go with sprayin it... you didnt waste to much money though :thumb:

#76012 haha. well, the third batch of paint is looking much better now. I sanded it back down and started over. It's looking much more promising.

you know, if this turns out looking good, I may just have to drive up there and show you guys.

Edit: I just realized that if this turns out looking like shit, you guys are never going to let me live it up. Like that one dude who fucked up his engine bay with the yellow rattle can. XD

#76026 Looks way too thick. Needs to be more like water. it is not going to come close to covering on the first coat. Having it thin will make the bubbles to pop and cause the paint to self level.

Here's my first coat:

I waited 24 hours for each thin coat to dry.

The next pic was after about 6 or so coats, all that thin:

absolutely no orange peel, as the paint was thin enough to self level :thumb:

If you start to see orange peel, wet sand (the grit will depend on amount of orange peel - but nothing lower than 1200) and then continue with lighter coats. :thumb:

#76135 I tried this with a hood as well. I used Rustoleum black and I put some self leveling additive that I had in it. Still had tons of orange peel that I spend hours blocking out. After about 10 coats of rolling it on I was till having a problem of breaking through the paint around the edge of the hood when sanding. I ending up buying some spray cans of the same color and putting 5 coats of that on. Then sanding again before buffing with a high cut compound a few times. It came out nice but for the work I'd much rather just buy a quart of paint and do it with an HPLV gun.
