#118482 Guys I have this problem with my car. Whenever I on the light the temp gauge rise a bit. When I on the highway the temp reach 3/4. I just change the head gasket and I m not using thermostat.
I am living in indonesia the temp here is 37 celcius is it ok if I don't use thermostat? is it my thermoswitch bad or other switch? I am really sorry for my bad english. Thank u in advance

#118493 First check to see the fan is working and second make sure you have bled 100% of air out of the coolant system.

If you still have overheating after that and if it is happening just after you changed the head gasket, then I think that may be the problem. If the head gasket did not seal properly, then compressed air from your cylinders can be pushed through into your coolant system. This will cause your car to run hot and your coolant overflow (plastic container near radiator) will overflow eventually as more air is forced into the system and the engine runs hotter.

What likely happened is
1. the block and/or head surface was not cleaned well for the new head gasket.

2. The head bolts were re-used (they are stretch bolts, once they are stretched they should be replaced) or not torqued properly.

3. The cylinder head is warped from prior overheating.

You should not need to run without a thermostat. Your engine and ecu is designed to run optimally at operating temperature. Running without a thermostat sounds like a bandaid to attempt to fix the real problem, which is the head gasket.
