I'm not aware of any way to "upgrade" the AC. Are you talking about swapping to 94+ AC system? I know that R12 doesn't cool as good as R134a so they made the 94 systems more efficient. Most people with 93 and older systems are forced to convert to R134a coolant in their old systems.

All you can do really is take it to an AC shop and have it "charged". It's not expensive, and I really don't recommend trying to do it yourself with a bottle you buy at the auto parts store. They need to purge all the moisture and old "freon".

R12 actually cooled better. They switched to 134a because it was said at the time to be less harmful to the enviroment. Which it as it turns out isnt the case. its the same. People swap to 134a now because R12 cost an arm and a leg to recharge or do anything to. Its hard to get it now. You have to have a special license for it.
