If you have anything other than a 92-95 Civic, post it in here

#253036 So... my primary reason for buying my civic was fuel economy. I just wanted a vehicle that was fun to drive in addition to getting great fuel economy. I'm really glad I bought an EG civic instead of a garbage metro or some other junk. The more I learn about my EG, the happier I am about it. The civic is very well engineered, and also easy to work on, thanks in a large part to the extensive knowledge on this forum! :thumb:

I am a hard-core musclecar guy, and prior to gas getting to the $4/a gallon mark, I was daily driving my 3/4 ton sliverado truck, which got about 13 mpg. The reason I own a truck is to haul non-running musclecar projects around with my flatbed trailer.

Here is my 'back-burner' project '67 GTO which I have owned for almost a decade now. The primary reason for buying this car was NOT fuel economy :?

This is just a mock-up of the engine I'm screwing together in my spare time for the GTO. Its a 1968 Pontiac 428 block bored .065 over with an Eagle stroker crank that brings it up to about 463 cubic inches. I've beefed the block with 4 bolt main caps and hard-blok in addition to forged internals and O-rings on each cylinder with large chamber heads to net about an 8.3:1 static compression ratio. This was all done to support the 6-71 Weiand supercharger. I plan to underdrive it so I can still run 92 octane pump gasoline, but it should produce somewhere in the 600-700 hp neighborhood.

I should mention that big crazy carb adapter is off of a drag boat! I've since sold it and have a different adapter that mounts the dual holley carbs sideways, and its lower so I'll be able to see around it a little more easily!

Posed with those two choices, I would do an IROC Z, just because those are really cool cars that you can still pick up cheap. The parts are cheap too.
The 1st gen camaros are just way too expensive these days, especially the 69's.

You can still score a decent running/driving 80's IROC off of craig's list for a couple grand and then build it up from there. If you have a few more g's to throw down you could even score a convertible. Those are going to be very collectible soon. Also the 80's IROC/z28 cars handle really well. The one drawback to that chassis is there isn't much room for a large custom exhaust system underneath... but there is plenty of options to deal with that.

The ultimate would be a clean 80's camaro with a LS1/6 speed swapped in from a modern vette/camaro/transam/gto

I would even consider building a 85-92 camaro, if I didn't already have 6 vehicles and a trailer!

Right now this GTO is stashed under a tarp at my mom's house. I'll get to working on it more, and might even finally get it running on the street this summer. I've done alot to it, but there's still a long way to go! I'll update this thread as I get around to working on the goat this spring and summer, so stay tuned!

#253045 yeah the reason i say 86 is that its the only year they offer the iroc (5.7L) with a manual transmission from the factory, all the other years were automatic

so if i were to restore one i would want to get a 5spd one
(cuz i highly dislike auto) lol

and as for the 69, i like the hide away headlights they have
i watched a epsiode of over haulin and they did a camaro with
that style and i was like damn!!

I agree with you as far as transmissions. My GTO is a 4 speed car and manuals are just way more fun to drive if you're a real car guy.

Ha, my civic is a manual and its fun to drive, even though its a CX gutless wonder 70 hp model... lol 70hp, yes that is quite pathetic, but it does get 40 mpg

Most camaro's from that era were auto's for some reason... and if you wanted the 5.7L (350) with the Tuned port injection, then you had to settle for the 700r4 auto.

You could always just swap in the manual trans like this guy did:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/cto/2343259255.html

That is a nice camaro I've been watching. If it is a straight and clean as it looks that is a nice ride for $4k... and it has the 5 speed conversion already done. you could probably get it for $3500

If you go to the CL ad, and scroll down to the pic of the dragstrip staging lanes, you'll see the ass of a 72 chevelle that looks just like my old SS that I used to own... silver with black stripes

A '69 camaro? You'd have to give a left nut for that car these days... even for a basket case. Way too overpriced. IMHO, the 67's and 68's are cleaner anyway and you can always dot he hidden headlight (RS) conversion on any of them. If you're really on the cheap, you can clone a Camaro out of a firebird, which can be found for less money.

Anytime I talk about musclecars, somebody always brings up the 1st gen camaro. Its a very popular bodystyle. If you can afford to build one, its a good investment.

#262826 I love that year of the GTO. I have maybe ever seen 3 that were in decent shape so they're pretty rare. What carbs are on there? and have you thought about drive shafts? Its something that is often over looked in build like this and when your at the strip with slicks and good traction I've seen them go bang a lot.

#268390 I had a 66 galaxy and miss it all the time man. These cars are timeless and hold on to it as long as possible! ESPECIALLY this GTO. I love the stacked headlights look. youre a lucky man

There defiantly holleys, but There not true double pumpers, they have vacuum secondaries....

I've grown up around gm muscle all my life. I drove a 68 camaro through most of my learning to drive years , that car currently sits in my dads garage and runs low 11 sec et. With a mild built big block, And its a full interior, full body, and heater, street car. I also have a 71 nova built 350 muncie 4spd car that I got when I was 13 I'm still in the process of finishing. My dad has stock piles of nova cars and spare parts and a few camaros setting around too. I'm as much of a old school gm gear head as i am Honda. Possibly more lol

That body style gto is very hard to find, I was impressed your still using a pontiac engine base for the build, most people opt for the big or small Chevy engines I think that's pretty cool :thumb:

Best of luck on the build
