Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#38420 Hi everyone,
I am very new to the site and was wondering what should I do with my eg9. I just sold my SER Spec V not too long ago and wanted a reliable, cheap, daily driven car. After one week of being stock, I got bored and started to fix it up. Here are the specs so far.

D16z6 /w 176K (Needs head gasket replacement & recently replaced tranny and clutch)
Intake & Exhaust
Lowered
16" Rims
CF lip

Cosmetically it looks fine and I wanted to start working on the engine more. I know there is a long debate back in forth about B series swap and building the D series engine. My goal is to make a high 13's low 14's street car with reliablity and decent power. So far I spent about $4.5K and wanted a total budget of $10k to go into this car. I live in Bay Area, Ca and wanted this car to be smog legal as well and not get too much attention from the cops.

Should I plan A: Dump $ into a B16A swap with a few bolt ons or Plan B Turbo the D series with a Edelbrock Turbo Kit and rebuild the engine. I just saw an awesome deal for a B16A complete swap kit for $1,600 but not sure how much would be put into it to get it BAR'red. Those dam P30's are hard to find. Please share your thoughts/opinions.

Thanks :?

#38434 ooo another bay area head.

Being smog legal requires having everything for the smog emissions for a b16a. It is a lot of know how on what is included for the Smog Legal BAR sticker.

If you go Turbo D16, chances are you would pass the smog test but it will be smog legal with the CARB sticker.

iknow i dont pass anything period and I'm in San Francisco hahah.

#38470 Derbo, your Coupe is one to admire. I was actually reading up on your build thread and liked what you have done. I am leaning towards rebuilding the d16z6 engine since it is dirt cheap to replace one if it blows. Have you ever timed your car? How much power are you pushing? If I can hit 200hp I would be satisfied. :thumb:

What K series? because if that includes the K20 from the early model RSX type S's and they do reputable work, that's a freaking steal for that swap.

#38548 Boost your D16. Swapping to a B16 will leave you with disappointment.

Feeling boost Spool up is soooo much more fun then just Riding Vtec. Having Riden in Turbo D16 Civics I am tempted to break the bank and turbo my Civic.

Plus since you live in Cali, I am sure you are aware that the police there dont like imports. (from what I have read online anyways). It would be better to have a boost in the since you can take it off rather easy as compared to swapping another engine in the case you need to.

When you end up boosting your D16(after your engine work) you will want to KEEP IT UNDER 220HP. Over that your rods will start to break. another important thing is GET A TUNE if you want to keep your engine around for a while. Another thing to keep in mind is when you put a blow off valve in, Make sure its not to load, that will keep the cops out of bay, as well as touch up the Intercooler with Black Radiator Paint.

See the bold parts? Yes? good. If you end up boosting (I have a Feeling that you will) Make sure to follow them. Another Great resource is TurboD16. I learned alot from there.

If your going to go flat out and spend money out your arse. Then go with a K24a2 Swap. It has the K "Performance Vtec" like the RSX and has the Extra Torque and Displacement of the K24.

However Since like most of us he is on a budget a Turbo D16 will meet his needs for now, and if does a Junk yard turbo, then he wont be spending that much either. well expect for maybe the tune.

his budget is 10k, full out k series swap

with 10k he could do the k swap and boost if he wanted

i made 228whp on a stock d16. My rods were a ok on a crome dyno tuned. The only thing I was 5th gear boosting and the strain on the motor couldn't take it. If you do boost a D16z6, be sure to have a new headgasket and make sure oyur compression is okay. ARP headstuds will benefit the car too as well.

Have thing you mentioned is a good idea.

I have read the limits on Stock rods are 250-275whp (Under "How much power can I get on a stock bottom end (block)". However Depending on how old your motor is, or how much abuse you have given it(Or will be once you Boost it). That will degrade your reliability. I wouldn't recommend over 220hp. Especially if its your Daily Driver. You will loose power through your drive train. So If your making 220hp at your wheels, you might be making 235-250 at your crank. Depending on your drive train.

When I end up Boosting my D16z6, I will Aim for 200ish Whp, Going with a T25. I could go higher, However I have 244K miles on my Engine, Its also my Daily Driver, I will also be driving the piss of it on the weekends, Running through all the Mountain roads we have around here.

For Anyone who is planing on Boosting there D-block defiantly check This Out. It has tons of information on how to boost your D.

#39374 yea.

My setup

ARP Headstuds
Comestic Heavy Duty Headgasket
The motor had a 90k service when changing to the cometic headgasket and arp headstuds. (Timing belt, water pump etc).
Spoolinperformance Log Manifold
2.5" Downpipe
Garrett T3 Super60 .42/.48

Made 228whp 200tq on a basically stock D16. 100k on the motor Daily driven. Running an ACT Street Clutch Disc. I gave it PLENTY-o-Boost and lots of race events as well as mountain cruises. The death of it was when I raced it on the freeway with a mustang. (Big Mistake)

Image

The motor was is great condition except I destroyed the Piston rings due to high EGT from freeway boosting. (big no no on stock motors w/ boost)

you can achieve under 240whp pretty good with stock internals and as long as the fuel and timing is adjusted properly by a good tuner. If you ever seen the stock motor that can.. this is the link..
