Technical Topics specific to the Hatchback body - NOT where you post pics/build specs of your car.

#114001 Hello everyone!

I recently picked up a 92 EG for $2000. Short story is, I had a 91 Nissan Stanza (my first car) with an auto tranny and after one rebuild and feeling the tranny asking for a second, I decided to put the money for a rebuild into a "new" car instead. So a buddy of mine found this hatch for sale, he considered it a sound purchase (knows much more about cars than I do).

Here are some things I know/have been told about the car:

160k miles on the body
80k miles on a D15B2 swap (no paperwork)
Lowered a bit on Neuspeed suspension
Sitting on 2000 Si Rims
Pyle alarm system installed (?)
Some low quality headlights/reflectors installed
No power steering or A/C
Little bit of rust on driver door (looks like a door was opened into it) and fenderwells
Intake and cat-back exhaust, brand unknown
Carbon fiber hood and spoiler
Inspection was due this month (yeah I feel like a fool for that one but I've been stressed with school and thankfully it passed)
No spare key or alarm fob (key is easy, but see below about fob)

Now, the main things I was looking for when considering a new car instead of a tranny rebuilt was reliability and good mileage. A Honda Civic definitely fits that bill. However, I was enlightened to the fact that people in my area love stealing these cars. I would be very unhappy if I came out to the parking lot and found my car on blocks, or worse, an empty parking space.

With that in mind, I was considering selling the Si rims and throwing steel wheels on it, maybe replacing the carbon fiber hood with a stock one, and installing a kill switch. I would hope that if the car at least LOOKS stock, it might draw less attention. Of course, if someone needs a quarter panel or something from the interior, they don't care about hoods/spoilers/wheels.

What would you guys recommend in this situation? What would be a good place to stick the kill switch (someplace hidden, obviously, but I guess if someone on here recommends it, it's a place a thief would look for it), and to what would I attach it? Ignition coil? Also, the Si rims have 195/55/R15's. If I wanted to pull the tires off the rims and put them on steelies, can I just find 15" steelies with the right bolt pattern? Or do steelies have varying widths that might not match the tires I have?

Also, is there a way to contact Viper an obtain a replacement fob? I don't know if the alarm is say, registered to the VIN or an account number, or how I would prove that I'm not just some thief trying to get an easy way into someone's car.

Thank you all very much :-)

edit: Just read the "How to protect your car from thieves" thread, curious about replacing/re-keying the locks and ignition.

#114015 Hey OG, thanks :-)

It's good to hear someone else say it sounds like a good deal, as a poor college student I gotta watch where I put my money ya know?

Unfortunately no pics yet, it's finals week and I got some uncooperative weather. Plus, even though I just washed her two days ago, the trees and bushes keep insisting that my teal hatch should be powder yellow :-(.

Hopefully pics by the weekend.

#114242 Sounds like an good car overall.

For Secutiry:
http://causeforalarm.thecarthing.com/version7/

This site is the best Honda Security site ever. Install kill switches everywhere and on everything. Take advantage of your OEM switches in there, for example your ebrake when its up you can use that as a switch, your door being open, a/c switch, etc... The more creative you are the more likely your car wont be stolen.

My old Purple Coupe was broken into, and thankfully only small stuff was stolen out of it such as my Radar Detector and not the whole car itself.

#114256 Wow man, thanks for the link. Awesome information on there.

Time to learn how to wire :-). Despite working with/on/repairing computers on a daily basis, I'm lucky I can wire speakers properly haha but I guess I'll learn as I go.

Any wiring tips?

Any time. I also Work at a Computer shop where we fix Computers. When wiring up computers you never have to cut Wires, So its quite different.

My Biggest tip is to not use butt connectors, they suck and when you have problems, It will be with them.

You want to solder all your connections. Also when you do your cut off switches if your going more then 4ft you want to put a relay in.

Good luck :thumb:
