B16, B18, B20

#262658 Hi guys I have a 94 EG with a B18b3 would I be able to straight swap a B16a into it without changing the tranny?Should I keep the tranny?

Im not going force fed so think the B16a lump is a better N/A engine.

if you swap a B16 motor AND trans, your car will be SLOWER

if you swap a B16 trans to your B18b motor, your car will be QUICKER

so ur telling me a 142hp b18b will out run a 160 hp b16a just by adding a b16 trany the ls will gain more than 13 hp ?

The b16 tranny has better gearing in it than the b18. So yes the b18 with b16 tranny will outrun an all b18 setup. He is not gaining horsepower, just getting the most out of the power that is already there. Here are the specs for both trannys:

B16: 1st: 3.23, 2nd: 2.105, 3rd: 1.458, 4th: 1.107, 5th: 0.848, FD: 4.400
B18: 1st: 3.23, 2nd: 1.900, 3rd: 1.269, 4th: 0.966, 5th: 0.714, FD: 4.266

#262762 A B18b with a B16a tranny will beat a Full B16a swap. It will also beat a full GSR swap. I know this because I had this. I was neck and neck with a JDM ITR swapped EK with a 4.9 final drive.

THe LS has more torque and better low end pwer than a B16a.

My 140hp B20 with B16 Transmission in a Delsol Si left my friends Delsol VTEC with a Factory B16 in the dust. He had full Intake, Headers and exhaust, just like my Sol, However he had a better clutch. We did quite a few races and every single time I left him eating my dust. Freeway pulls, 1/4mile, from a dig, etc.

A b16 has more Horsepower, however the b18 and the b20's have much much more torque, and the useable power is lower in the rev band so you pull away. This is why "Bench Racing" or "racing" by looking at just numbers is pointless. the most important part about power is being able to use it effectively.

My b20/b16 tranny Delsol has beat quite a few cars including full gsr swap in eg hatch, "Built gsr"(itr cams, valves,etc) in eg hatch, many gsr teggys, 1st gen turbo supra, r32 vr6 golf, etc.

Try doing all that with a bone stock b16 engine with just Intake, headers and exhaust. Pro Tip, you cant.

You pay way too much attention to the HP rating of motors when that is not what matters.

The LS makes more torque flat out and makes it lower in the RPM range, there for it is more usable. LS motor combined with a B16a tranny means, the gearing is now the same on both, provided you are lined up against a FULL b16a swapped car. With gearing being the same, torque band and usable torque is what will let you win.

LIke others have said, and as I stated earlier, a full B16a or GSR swap will not beat a LS or B20 with a B16a tranny. power means nothing untill you are at speeds.
