On the heels of its well-received Boxster drop-top, Porsche rolled out its all-new third-generation Cayman coupe at the Los Angeles Auto Show today.

Anyone who is familiar with automaker's new mid-engine Boxster (it debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show) knows all they need to know about the Cayman. It is, in Porsche's own words, lower and longer, lighter and faster, more efficient and more powerful than ever. The standard Cayman model arrives with a 2.7-liter flat-six Boxer engine rated at 275 horsepower, while the premium Cayman S is fitted with a 3.4-liter six generating 325 horsepower. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox, while the automakers seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automated gearbox is optional. In performance configuration (PDK with Sport Chrono), the Cayman will run to 60 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds and the Cayman S will do it in 4.4 seconds.

Acceleration is only part of the story, as the mid-engine coupe is wider and riding on a longer wheelbase than its predecessor – with a low center of gravity and optimal balance, it should take to a slalom like an Olympic skier.

Porsche says the new Cayman will arrive in Spring 2013. Base price of the Cayman is $52,600, with the Cayman S starting at $63,800 (not including a destination charge of $950).
