dawg316 wrote:nice find. toyota pickups are very popular here. great price for the pickup. every thing here is all rotted away lol. must lean like a cholo with no sway bars ? what mods you got planed for it ?

get a solid bumper front rear. mount a winch. add lockers. and you should be set for anything :woot:

I'd love a build front bumper but they're big bucks... same for the winch. So my budget plan is to not get stuck :) One of the guys I wheel with has a winch, he's saved me a couple times. Truck is already locked front & rear.

The springs are stiff enough for road driving that it's able to take corners about as fast as a normal car when I have the 33 BFG AT's on.
With the 35" DC Mud COuntry tires on, it's all over the place lol.

I already put a 106k mi 22r in from an 86. And repaired the inner frame rails this summer because one of them was already getting thin and rusting through
I parted out the 86 and actually made a profit + have every spare part I need. Then I bought an 87 for the fiberglass bed and I'm in the process of parting that one out to make some profit. Both trucks had rotten frames beyond repair.

Working on these trucks usually ends up in a pile of rust on the floor.

Here's the new inner frame rail on the 85:

After welding in I coated it with POR 15 :thumb:

#280121 I don't have the new bed on yet... still need to paint it to match. For now I'm rocking a quick home depot wood bed:

I took it off roading like this last weekend:

#280365 I never thought I'd get into it but it's fun! After 10+ years of zipping around the city in lowered cars, swerving around every speed bump and pothole, being extra careful not to curb rims when parking... It's nice to take a beefed up 4x4, a cooler of beverages, a few friends and head out into the wilderness where you can run over huge rocks, logs, whatever is in the way you want to go. It's relaxing and you can camp out and make a weekend out of it.
Until you break something

I don't take some of the really crazy trails that some of my friends take their rigs on... and I'm usually the one heading back to camp to retrieve parts when they break something

Here's some videos:

Here's all the videos from offroading if you want to see more. There was a 1971 Toyota FJ40 and a few Samurai's and a RZR. THere's a roll over in one of the vids.

#315370 Took the truck to Southington Offroad Park last weekend.
It's not as extreme as Wellsville, so I didn't bother taking the bed off, putting on the cut fenders or my old beat up bumper. Also didn't have a trailer lined up so we chanced it and drove (1.5 hr each way) and tried not to break anything while there.

Image
The first trail I picked to go on turned out to be the worst lol

And that mud hole was fun, but no more. Cleaning out the inside of the frame was a PITA.

My friend brought his 99% stock Suzuki Sidekick and I'm impressed what that little 4x4 can do!

#354029 These days I might get to take the truck on a weekend offroad adventure once a year, if I'm lucky. It was looking pretty rough from the first few years I owned it:

Rolling on the daily 33" all-terrains

I took it to Wellsville once last year:
Image

Image
Then I parked it for winter and started catching up on maintenance. I also decided this truck deserved some fresh paint for its 30th birthday. I did a walk-around video before taking it to the paint booth...
https://youtu.be/IlCmOYdwZII

The amount of dents in this truck was ridiculous...
Image

Of course, there was some rust lurking...
Image

Image
Well that escalated quickly  I kept cutting and cutting until I was sure all rust was removed.

Image
Image

Blocked the body and it was time for the first coat of primer.
Image

Image
Blocked & primed some more.

Image
painted some new wheels in between primer coats.

Image
Gave the calipers & hubs some attention, since it would have nice wheels.

#354030 And here's the finished truck:

Image

Image

Image

Image
The wheels are painted with Dupli-color Bronze wheel paint. They were black with a silver 'beadlock' ring before. I wasn't sure if the red ring would be overkill, but now I think it looks perfect.

Image
Tan bedliner to match the interior & bronze wheels.

Image

Image
When you paint a truck, all the black plastic suddenly looks 2x as bad. So I painted the grill & trim as well.
