#52515 My tranny has just developed the 2nd to 3rd gear crunch when shifting at mid to higher RPM's. Figured it was a good time for me to learn how to rebuild a tranny :)

I got it apart today and I was expecting to see some really bad wear, but I guess because I stopped driving it shortly after it started grinding, I didn't cause too much wear.

I was looking for rounded teeth on the synchros, but they all looked OK and sharp. Here's some pics for the tranny guru(s):

on the mainshaft:

5th Gear Synchro & sleeve:

synchros look good to me (having never seen a new or worn one before)
How about that sleeve, any wear?

looking further down the mainshaft to 3rd-2nd:

now looking at the countershaft:

the 2nd & 3rd gears are the 2 gears side by side on the lower right

I don't have a press, so I couldn't get the sleeve off the countershaft.
What I'll probably end up doing is ordering the new parts I need and dropping off the mainshaft & countershaft at a shop with a press and paying them to replace the worn parts.

The only thing that looks a little worn to me (tranny noob) is the matching synchro teeth on the 3rd gear on the countershaft.
If possible from my pics, can someone tell me what looks like it needs replaced?

#52521 Those are some Nice Pictures. What Camera do you use?

The Good(or bad, as synchros are cheaper) news is the Synchros look good. However the Gear teeth on the following pics look bad and need to be replaced.

These should look like the 5th gear gear teeth. However they are notched up from the grinding.

#52986 well this is going to be expensive... [smilie=BangHead.gif]
Just to replace the gears with worn teeth:
Mainshaft 4th = $76.60
Mainshaft 3rd = $72.17
Countershaft low/first = $67.13
Countershaft 2nd = $73.61

That is not even including the synchro hub, sleeve, spring & ring.
The whole set (including gear) is
$217.09 for 3rd (mainshaft)
$253.14 for 2nd (countershaft)

So option 1 is to just replace the 4 gears for $289.51

option 2 is to replace the 4 gears and both sets of synchro hubs, sleeves, springs & rings for $613.96 :o

is there a smiley for "holy shit I'm gonna get raped"

Getting a Second hand transmission will probally give him problems as well, if not be a worse transmission. All the Second Hand Transmissions I have bought have all had issues, gear nics, leaked oil, etc. Not good odds getting a good transmission.

I figured that would be expensive. When done it will be a Nice Nice Transmission that will last you a long time, Well Unless you do something dumb and Break it.

I would never trust my Transmission to cheaper Aftermarket parts. If your going to spend a good chunk of change on these. you might as well do it the Right way the first time.

#53045 Well good news is that I might save a few bucks, I know someone who can get me their discount at a dealership. I'm writing up a list of parts right now.
What else should I replace while I am getting parts at a discount? I'm thinking axle seals, shift rod/linkage seal, bitch pin, MTF fluid ... anything else?
I also have an OBX LSD arriving any day now, Is there anything else I should need to install that?
Like Chrono404 said, I'm scared to buy another tranny because it could be just as bad or worse, plus Si trannys are getting harder to find around here.

#53143 An OBX lsd needs a bit of work before installation.

This is a project I want to do with my own tranny, but the prices you mention are discouraging.
Nothing beats a perfect tranny tough, and you can always better break an axle than your tranny.
