Hey guys newbie to transmission stuff basicly I have recently had to remove my s20 transmission due to it finally giving out well wineing all the time and becoming hard to get in gears but I was given a healthy s40 transmission I'm not sure from what car tho but I've found the gear rations are completely different my old box used to have very longish gears but when I changed I would drop out of vtec and come back in and my 5th gear was really long the new box the box seems very close ratio from first to 4th and vtec stays in through the change but I change to 5th and it's like it slows down I'm not guna lie I've pushed the car on the s20 box off the clocks but Im topping out in 4th gear in the s40 box 5th seems like a crusing gear is there any way of combining both boxes? Like remove 5th from the s20 and installing it and the final drive in s40 cheers if you can help guys I'm new to the whole looking at gear boxes ratios and that.

From what I know, they are interchangeable for the most part. I've never tried first hand though, so I can't tell you yes 100%.

This might be helpful:

Also, Here is an old thread with people's gear combinations:

I ran out of breath reading that.
They're the same within the same OBD generation. Most gears between generations have small differences either on the main or countershaft that makes them incompatible.
