#226404 1992 civic ex auto

went to phoenix, drove home last night back to vegas i hear a boom like a belt broke, battery light came on. i was pretty close to home car went into limp mode gauges stopped working lights stopped working. i get home i come to see that the tensioner bolt fell out and the belt was not spinning the altenator. i charge the battery and fix the alt issue. put it into drive and hear and instant grind and clunk and now the car doesnt move in drive or go in reverse. this car is an auto. the transmission sounds like its trying to catch a gear or something....

the car has 177k miles on it just changed the trans fluid about 800 miles ago. is the trans out or did my altenator issue screw something up with my auto tranny that caused it to go out if that is the case

#226416 kinda sounds like maybe the boom caused the pensioner bolt to go or something like that and maybe and this is just a maybe but my thoughts on the boom is where your problems are......as the belt not spinning would not cause a boom in my mind almost sounds like something went in the transmission or something like that check the solenoids on the front of the transmission for their resistance, make sure everything is plugged in....and check your trans fluid....

possibly im thinking that your torque converter may have went but id look at any and all other possible scenarios before taking out your trans....

#226437 what im trying to get at, im pretty sure the boom was the head of the bolt braking off. but after driving it in limp mode till the car finally died, would that cause the trans to not work. do i need to reset something.....

#226449 no, nothing you could possibly do to your alternator would effect the trans unless you where to physically beat one with the other. In fact your alternator wont ever damage anything except perhaps quite rarely a battery. I would say that your two problems are completely unrelated and just a case of bad timing. You should consider buying a new torque converter.

Also when something like that happens, you dont have to reset anything, the light will go away as soon as the battery starts getting proper voltage again.

Id make sure your idler pully is operating smoothly, that your belt isnt overtight, and that nothing has a loose or bent pulley.

Good luck and make sure you ask if you have anymore questions. I dont know whether you are new to cars but if you can do your work yourself it will litteraly be about 10 times cheaper. Our cars are also quite easy to work on.
