Inside your oil filters. Yes, Fram sucks

Okay, so I started a thread on the D about how shitty Fram brand filters are in overall quality. Figured I'd share with civic-eg as well.

I work for a parts store, for the time being, and we got a chance to setup a small display of some common filters that are sold. Fram, tough guard in this case, was cut open. There was no check vlave in it and it has a construction paper type material on the ends with a thin alum. support colum.

(from left to right: K&N, Mobil1, Puralator Pure1, Fram)

The K&N filter and the Mobil1 unit have the exact same internals, right down to the stamping on the filter end caps. Major defferance between the 2 filters is the casing. K&N casing is slightly thicker than the Mobil1 and it has a nut on the end of it.

The Pure1 filter does not lack in quality either. Nice filter construction with oil check valve and "ez grip" coated casing.

I went in to a Fishers Auto Parts store(aka Federated Auto) and they had a similar display.
Everyone knows Wix makes a good filter. I need not speak on this one here's the guts

The guy at the counter claimed that Wix and Hastings have the same filter internals. I can't vouch for this as I didn't have to time to look each filter over enough.

It's funny they cut open the Advance Auto Brand filter and the Powerflo filter. Both can be had at Advance Auto for ~ $2.50 for the powerflo and $3.25 for the Advance brand. Both share the Purelator filter packing. Just a diff case/sticker on the filter.

In the end, you can buy almost any brand filter and it's better than Fram.

If someone has one of those Wal Mart Supertech filters layin around and is willing to cut it open that would be cool. Lack of time and money.... and the fact I haven't been to Wal Mart in ages :-p

Also any other filter, including OEM, you guys have and can post up would be cool as well :thumb:

Nice info. If you get a chance, do an OEM one, I'd be interested to see how that stacks up against the others.

I have to drive out to the Welding Supply company and get my welding gas tanks... just happens to be a Honda dealer right around the corner from there. If I can spare the $5 or w/e it is I'll pick one up :thumb:
