sounds like air is making it's way from your combustion chamber to your coolant system. could be a head gasket leaking.

When I had the problem it was the head gasket. Pressure from the cylinder was leaking into the coolant system.

If the coolant gets hot enough it can boil and will force it's way out like that. It's often due to a bad mixture. But the obvious culprits for any cooling problem are air in the system, too much or too little coolant, a leak in the system, the fan's not coming on, the pumps going out, the thermostat is stuck closed, or you have clogged coolant passages.
I completely forgot the radiator cap. If your cap doesn't hold pressure, the coolant's boiling point will be lower.

Maybe you blocked a coolant passage or something horrible like that. Maybe you simply hooked up a coolant line incorrectly. It's impossible to tell at this point especially since none of us can see your vehicle first-hand. If the motor was stock, it'd be a fairly simple diagnosis. Good luck.

Did you add coolant and bleed the air out of the system after doing the mini-me?

If you run the car up to temp, shut it off for a few minutes, like 5-10 minutes, start it up again, does it smoke white at all? or has it ever smoked white since you heard the loud knock?
What kind of head gasket did you use? was it an MLS (multi-layer steel), or on of those perferated ones, that are like coated paper?
