odd bogging issue

I have posted this elsewhere to no avail. i have this oddball, intermittent, pain in the ass bogging issue I would like to take care of. I thought someone here might have an idea. Here goes...

Car starts, fine, idles fine. Sometimes (about 1/3 of the time) when the engine gets up to normal temperature, the engine really wants to be at 1500 rpm. it idles at 1500 rpm (a little high). if you press the gas slightly, the engine will kind of surge, rpms going up, but then back down quickly, trying to stay at 1500rpm. if you give it more gas (push beyond 3500 rpm) it runs just fine. while its misbehaving and ur cruising around town, fully letting off the gas will cause it to bog hardcore. my engine loses lots of speed, and fast. again, likely after the ubiquitous 1500 rpm. now here is the clincher, if i turn off the ignition and turn it back on again (dont even have to slow down, just step on the clutch and click-click) the problem goes away completely until the next time the car is cold started, and even then its a maybe.

I assume its a sensor issue somewhere, and it must have something to do with the coolant temperature. but not sure what would cause it.

This all started when i had an SIRII b16 swapped into my del sol. I'll mention now that I get really bad gas mileage too. I have lived with it up till now, but i think its time to get it straightened out.

I'm guessing that you don't have a check engine light on?

no cel at all. thats what blows my mind. I have been searching a lot on this and the 2 things i keep running into are tps and iacv. so going to have a look at those.

do you have any aftermarket gauges installed? I'm wondering about your a/f ratio & fuel pressure.

What ECU are you running?

no aftermarket gauges installed. the ecu is the one that came stock with the SIRII engine in japan, not sure which that is. At first I thought it was running really lean at idle, but the fact that cycling the key makes it go away makes me pretty sure its a random sensor issue.

have you check if the cel bulb is working? when you put the switch in "on"position does it light up? if not maybe that's why you can't get any code. :? tps and iacv can throw out your idle maybe cleaning them could help.

that's why i mention it, sometime the small things get under look and we waste time looking for other things. try checking the bulb maybe is blown. put the key in "on" position to see if it lights up.

wouldnt you know it, it is dead. I'll have to straighten that out before going too far. I really do wonder now if the hacks that put my engine in did that on purpose, i have been chasing ghosts since it was installed. thanks for sanity check ;)

cool man no prob, that a relief to hear now once you put the bulb on it'll be a lot easer to fix. And I know some people here in Puerto Rico that do that when they swap, if something is wrong they take out the bulb and solve "no code". let us know what was your problem once you straighten that out. :thumb:

before i did an engine swap the shady dealership i bought my car from had removed my check engine light. i didn't find out until the performance shop that did the swap noticed it was missing. dishonest people suck ass.

i would vote either throttle position sensor, or if you have a hollow cat, sometimes the decrease in backpressure can cause the computer to freakout and make the car run weird. its rare but it happens. :thumb:

Well mine seems to be the IACV. I'll have to track down a new one one of these days and see if that fixes it.

sounds like tps, my car has done that before. but my problem was one of the wiring clips on the ecu wasnt clipped in all the way.
