how are engines and trannys matched up?

im trying to figure out how engines and trannys are matched up? how do you know which fits which?
I'm not planning on changing my tranny just want to learn how they are paired up

Pretty much the series of the engine matches the trans
D Series (d15 d16) mate with d series trans
B series (B16 b17 b18 b20) mate with b series
There are a few mixtures like the older prelude b series wont match up with the newer b series stuff and the f20/f22 trans in the s2000 will not mate up with the h/f series out of the 90's accords but for the most part that logic works.
