How do I know if my head gasket is bad

Some or all of the following symptoms:
White smoke out of exhaust, overheating, oil & coolant mixed together, low power due to low compression.

There are a lot of factors when you're thinking about a head gasket replacement.
If it was caught early, it might just need a head gasket replacement. That is cheaper to do. I would say ~500
If it wasn't caught early and you've been running it with a bad head gasket, you would want to check the head for any signs of it being warped. If it is, it can cost you upwards of ~1000.
That isn't the only thing you check though. If it has been bad for quite awhile and you know you've seen a lot of white/gray smoke coming out of your exhaust, your catalytic converter may have gone bad as well as the O2 sensor.
