besides having lots of HP, it looks like their roads are really smooth like a fresh blacktop

Teal - Horse power helps get you up to speed but what a drift car really needs is torque. They need that torque to be able to break the wheels loose at that high speed and get it to slide sideways. Nice roads help too.
From personal experience I can say that smooth roads are a huge factor. Used to roll around with some drifters in Phoenix and they would use parking lots so they didn't get into trouble. It super scary riding in a car drifting because you have no control over the car. You just see what are sliding towards at 40 M.P.H. lol
