#338815 A subframe is the main structural part of the chassis that the engine & suspension bolts to. The front subframe bolts in, the rear is part of the chassis. A subframe brace is often used on the rear when installing a larger swaybar to prevent subframe tear out from the extra force of the larger swaybar.

#338823 What Teal said plus the steering rack bolts to this as well. It also provides structural strength to the car.
