i took this off of the yahoo news article today, "the 10 most stolen cars and trucks in america"

However, new license-plate recognition (LRP) technology is catching more car thieves. Cameras with LPR technology are being mounted low on tow trucks and other vehicles and scan 28 million plates a month. Another way: baiting thieves by planting laptops or other desirable electronics in the car that have a GPS-tracking device implanted.

Locally, the P.D. has a DUI task force team and they all have the LPR cams mounted on all 4 corners. During the day, a traffic cop has camera duty (registration/ insurance/ stolen cars/ warrents/ etc) and at night, it's DUI time. The DUI checkpoints have cams too.

also parking enforcement in some states have been using this for quite a while now.

i have not seen one of those cameras mounted on a tow truck. maybe it might eliminate theft by towing. if this is true, i could now sleep better at night.
