Ghetto Rigged Wiring

when I bought my civic the guy did some awful wiring under the dash. fuses are going out left and right, and the stereo wiring is all fubar.

I'm thinking about re-wiring EVERYTHING for the stereo. i.e. new power/ground from the battery terminal, new speaker wire, ect ect.

my only question is, how do i find an ignition wire to hook it up. I'm thinking I could just wire it into a fuse that only comes on with the ignition engaged.

this would work, mirite?

:Edit: I thought this post would be better in this sub-forum and not the audio section because IMO it's more relevant to electrical wiring.

how bad is it? might be easier to get another dash harness thats uncut

underneath my dash where the fuses are at there are loads of spliced wires and crap.

in the radio portion of the dash, the wires are snipped way far back in the dash (almost can't reach them)

the reason I want to re-do the WHOLE wiring is because I don't know if the splicing under the dash is screwed up. I don't want to just use the stock wiring in case it doesn't work. my last radio that I had in there wouldn't work unless I had my lights on. that leads me to believe that there is some faulty wiring in there somewhere.

id just go ahead and replace it that way you know everything will be correct it'll take a little bit of time but its worth it and plus theres 2 pieces to the dash harness one for the Radio/cluster/etc/ and then the one for ECU portion if go to the junker and check it out and study it you'll be able to find an easy way to re wire it or replace it IMHO id replace it just because you dont know if the original owner did any of the wiring correct

Thread ressurection MWuwhahahaha!

I always rewire my audio wires entirely. Power , constant, ground, speak wires anything. I dont trust any internal radio wiring due to idiots that decide to switch the radio more than once and cut the wires waaaay to far. I always use the cigg lighter power wire as a constant. It turns on which you switch the ignition on and can handle the addon. Works for me everytime, and ive done it millions of times!

haha.

My cig lighter is non funtional too. It's somewhere in the trunk actaully.

non functional? wires just gone? ive rarely ever had a car install where the cigg lighter just wasnt functional, or the wires were gone. But in those few times, a splice off the power wire and a toggle switch was suffice. (my freinds didnt care about flipping a switch to get the radio workin!)

The best option for you would be to get a NEW/USED uncut and complete harness for under the dash. That way you can just plug everything in to the factory locations. You dont want to add to all the maddness that is already under there.

I agree 100%. I'm an advanced MECP that worked in the industry for about 4 years re-wiring other people's f-ups, rewiring factory amps etc.

BTW the cig lighter is not a constant 12v. Wiring a manual switch is ridiculous. If you are dead set on running new constant and switched, you can use the option pins on the under dash fuse box.
